Restaurants shift blame to weather for sinking sales (Nation's Restaurant News - Financial News) - Mar 10, 2010

At Burger King Holdings Inc., the company's use of winter weather to explain a same store sales decline in the first two months of 2010 was met with criticism as well. Miami based Burger King said same store sales in the United States and Canada fell 8.2 percent for the two month period ended Feb. 28, compared to an increase of 3.1 percent in the same period last year. The company said winter weather accounted for about 3 points in the decline. John Ivankoe, an analyst at J. P. Morgan, said the results, even when adjusted for weather, still put Burger King behind its peers.

Burger King: cold weather to blame for sales slump (The Sun Sentinel - Business) - Mar 10, 2010

S and Canada January sales were impacted by adverse weather conditions, which worsened in February, resulting in lower than anticipated sales.''. Burger King attributed about 3 percentage points of the sales decline to ``inclement weather'' in the Central and Eastern United States, where over 75 percent of the chain's restaurants are located. But the company offered no explanation for the rest of the drop, which is likely due to a combination of less restaurant traffic and customers gravitating toward lower priced items like the controversial $1 double cheeseburger. ``We believe that same store sales have remained weak lately, which makes us believe the issue is bigger than weather,'' UBS restaurant analyst David Palmer wrote Tuesday in a note.

Burger King Sales Snowed Under (Forbes.com: Latest Headlines) - Mar 09, 2010

Adding insult to Burger King's injury, Morgan Stanley analyst John Glass expects McDonald's to pick up domestic market share in the coming months as the McCafe program is scheduled to roll out new frappe and smoothie products through the spring and summer. However, Burger King is fighting back with its Breakfast Muffin sandwich and Breakfast Bowl, which the company is releasing later this month

According to Wells Fargo analyst Jeff Omohundro, Burger King's woes might not be all about the weather. The analyst says that substantially higher unemployment rates in the 18 34 year old male population "provides some meaningful context for the slowing sales trends that many quick service chains have experienced over the last year or so.". There might be some sunnier days ahead for Burger King though. Barclays analyst Jeffrey Bernstein notes that the company experienced an uptick in traffic for the first week in March with positive responses to its new Steakhouse XT burger

Burger King's January-February Sales Disappoint (Morningstar Stock Analyst Notes) - Mar 09, 2010

We are modestly lowering our full year revenue forecast for Burger King BKC following disappointing January and February sales results. These changes were not enough to warrant a reduction in our fair value estimate, but reflect pervasive quick service restaurant industry pressures. Given elevated unemployment rates and aggressive industry discounts, we had anticipated a mid single digit decline in Burger King's U. S and Canada comparable system sales during the fiscal third quarter.

Hey Burger King, Where's Herb? (10Q Detective) - Mar 08, 2010

Comparable same store sales at Burger King (BKC $17.90) operations in North America (more than 7,500 stores) declined three percent versus a year ago. Consumers are eating out less in this economy — and when dining out they are choosing less expensive restaurants. With the price value proposition shifting to the value side, Burger King needs to figure out how to retain customers — and their loyalty – in an industry dominated by burger pricing wars.
