SAP pushes back on Gartner for its ranking of Business Objects (The Enterprise System Spectator) - Feb 18, 2010

SAP is complaining about Gartner's latest Magic Quadrant, which shows its Business Objects product line ranked way down the line for "ability to execute," behind Oracle, Microsoft, IBM, SAS, and Microstrategy. From : When vendors make it into the top right "leaders" quadrant of a Gartner Magic Quadrant (MQ) report, they generally don't complain But SAP isn't thrilled with the "ability to execute" positioning of SAP BusinessObjects in the 2010 Gartner MQ for Business Intelligence Platforms, which was released early this week

SAP Ranked Number One Business Intelligence Vendor in Revenue by ... (PR Newswire (press release)) - Jun 16, 2009

Yet the growth rate shown for SAP in this study represent organic growth because IDC methodology backstreams revenue of acquired companies," said Dan Vesset, vice president of Business Analytics Research, IDC. "In 2008, the company's SAP BusinessObjects portfolio benefited from the vastly enlarged sales force that was able to sell BI tools to SAP's applications customers. We continue to see strong opportunities for companies to move along the path toward pervasive BI by spreading the use of query, reporting, and analysis technology to more users. With the combined BI offerings, SAP is well positioned to fulfill the future needs of BI technology purchasers."

Business intelligence has downturn upturn (ZDNet Asia) - Jun 14, 2009

Business intelligence has downturn upturn By Tim Ferguson , Special to ZDNet Asia. . Business intelligence has enjoyed a boom despite the less than healthy state of the global economy. According to analyst house Gartner worldwide revenue for technology related to business intelligence, analytics applications and performance management grew by 22 per cent in 2008. The increase took overall spending to more than US$8.8 billion compared to around US$7.2 billion in 2007. Senior research analyst at Gartner, Dan Sommer, said this growth is partly down to consolidation in the industry as big vendors have focused on promoting the business intelligence technology they've acquired to their existing customers.

SAP Situational Apps: Tracking Public Sector Stimulus Dollars (James Governor's Monkchips) - May 26, 2009

Something that struck me very clearly reading the release was that this compliance application was being led by Business Objects, rather than SAP Classic. Now I haven't had a chance to get an update on the direct from SAP but this makes perfect sense. For one thing look at the speed of delivery.

SAP Social Network Analyzer: thoughts on company integration (James Governor's Monkchips) - May 19, 2009

At Sapphire last week the bloggers had a great session with Timo  Elliot , one of the influx of Business Objects talent at SAP. I was pleased that the green shoots of enterprise unstructured/social tooling progress I identified in depth last year had not been stamped out during the long night of the short knives that marks any software M&A. No siree BOBJ.

SAP focusing on smaller deals, business intelligence (The Enterprise System Spectator) - Mar 06, 2009

Friday, March 06, 2009 SAP focusing on smaller deals, business intelligence . SAP held a West Coast partner summit this week, and a Spectator reader in attendance gave me some feedback on the session.. According to my source, SAP is recognizing the challenge of selling under current economic conditions. Without revealing the actual numbers shared in the summit, let's just say that SAP is appropriately lowering its expectations for the coming year.

Is SAP really done with 'scary upgrades' and 'sleepless night' projects? (Between the Lines) - Feb 04, 2009

SAP has been working on better interfaces for months via partnerships with Adobe and its acquisition of Business Objects. Colgate Palmolive CIO Ed Toben noted that easier to use enterprise apps can lead to "a lot better use around the whole company." Note: When we're talking about enterprise applications we're not talking iPhone-ish user interfaces.

Accepting Excepting (Whit Andrews) - Feb 01, 2009

I count these, so far: Columba, Information Builders, Business Objects (which bought Inxight to get there), Endeca, Progress Software (via EasyAsk) and Attivio. There are a few others or more, but they're lost in the NDA mists (did I do inquiry with them as a client or did I take a briefing? How many PSTs ago was that, and was it before the laptop got stolen or after, before the crash last week or after?) They're all welcome to enter their names in the comments and make fun of my memory.

SAP to cut 3,000 jobs (ZDNet News) - Jan 28, 2009

The company didn't say where the cuts would be made, but noted that "all countries ..will contribute in some way". The first six months of 2008 had been successful for the company, Apotheker said, noting it had started with "strong organic growth" and "an excellent contribution from Business Objects", which SAP bought in October 2007. Tim Payne, a senior analyst at research firm Gartner, agreed that the purchase of the business-intelligence software specialist had proved very successful for the company. "SAP has had a lot of success in winning over people who were Business Objects customers," he told ZDNet.com.au sister site ZDNet UK. According to Payne, SAP has had success in finding income in other areas. "Their figures show that they are having success in getting people to pay up on their software licences," he said.

But the company will continue innovating aggressively through the enhancement packages, he said. SAP could also be looking to free up customer dollars for the rest of its portfolio, said Bruce Richardson, an analyst with AMR Research: "Maybe they're hoping by extending the maintenance period on the core stuff, people won't feel they've got to devote money for [a future] upgrade, and they'll say, 'Why don't we do more with Business Objects, or move to the CRM.'" .

IBM set to discuss 'Information Agenda' (New York Times) - Oct 27, 2008

, according to Forrester analyst Boris Evelson. Oracle still has a good deal of work to integrate products from its Siebel and Hyperion acquisitions, while SAP, which recently bought BI vendor Business Objects, has "some tough decisions to make on how to help their customers migrate from Netweaver BI to the new product line," Evelson said. Meanwhile, the IBM-Cognos merger saw few product overlaps and Cognos "already took the time a few years ago to streamline and upgrade the platform," he said.

One size fits all comes to business intelligence under SAP (Manufacturing Computer Solutions) - Oct 12, 2008

Set that aside though and analyst IDC appears to indicate approval of the direction of Business Objects' new BI solution: "Our research into factors that lead to pervasive use of business intelligence suggests that providing self-service access to all available, relevant information, which can originate in different internal or external systems, is key to BI diffusion," comments Dan Vesset, programme vice president at IDC.
