UPDATE: CVS Caremark 4Q Profit Rises 10% Amid Revenue Strength (Fox Business) - Feb 08, 2010

At its pharmacy benefits business, revenue rose 15% despite a 56% drop in claims processed, mostly owing to the termination of two big health plan clients at the start of 2009 and three fewer reporting days in the period That segment has been under scrutiny since late last year, when CVS said the Caremark business lost a net $48 billion in 2010 contracts At that time, CVS also said Caremark's operating profit could decline by 10% to 12% this year It rose just 3% in the fourth quarter on falling margins CVS/Caremark's same store pharmacy sales, which grew 73% in the fourth quarter, indicate the company is taking share from some competitors, said Scott Mushkin, analyst at Jefferies & Co

Bloomberg: Profit Windfall Ahead for Drug Store Chains (The Razor''s Edge) - Feb 05, 2010

Bloomberg.com is running a story about an underreported potential windfall for the nation's largest drug store chains Walgreen ( WAG ) and CVS Caremark ( CVS ). The reason for the optimism is the end of patent protection for the world's two best selling drugs Lipitor and Plavix Soon after blockbuster drugs lose patent protection is a very profitable time for drug stores as they have more control over pricing, and even though generic drugs are cheaper than branded drugs, they generally provide better profit margins for the pharmacies

Caremark wins pharmacy contract for Tennessee employees (tennessean.com - Business) - Jan 27, 2010

Winning the award has implications beyond dollars and cents as the nation's largest purchaser of drugs attempts to rebound from recent contract losses in other states and with other customers here "It's just good to see them getting back on the track of winning contracts," said Jeff Jonas, an analyst at Gabelli & Co in Rye, NY, which owns shares in CVS Caremark on behalf of clients "They're certainly going to be competitive on the price, given their size and the purchasing contracts they get from drug companies I think it's just a matter of marketing and presenting it correctly to the client" Including discounts that Caremark would pass along, and the company's administrative fees, the state expects to spend $138 billion on prescription drugs over the next five years

Potential Drug-Benefit Company Tax Hard To Gauge Now (NASDAQ) - Dec 17, 2009

By Dinah Wisenberg Brin, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES Pharmacy benefit managers face some uncertainty over prospects for a new tax to help pay for a national health care overhaul, although analysts at this point can only speculate on the potential effects if lawmakers impose such a levy Stocks of the major managed care companies Medco Health Solutions Inc (MHS), Express Scripts Inc (ESRX) and CVS Caremark Corp (CVS) traded roughly flat Thursday after slipping the previous day amid speculation that senators might include an industry tax in their health overhaul bill The effect of such a tax on PBMs, should it be approved, "is simply unknowable at this point," Lazard Capital Markets analyst Tom Gallucci said, noting that details are "nonexistent" and that the House health care bill doesn't call for a PBM tax Senators apparently were considering a PBM tax as a way to pay for the Medicare prescription drug benefit doughnut hole the part of the program for which seniors must pay out of pocket for their medicines The industry trade group, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, said the tax would increase premiums and out of pocket costs for consumers and the unions and employers who provide their prescription drug benefits
