Flush From Avatar, Murdoch Talks Tough Re: Ipads and Paywalls (BNET - Media) - Feb 04, 2010

The Australian born, British and US based media mogul's empire is now so vast that he can squeeze a quarter billion dollar's worth of profits out of any random quarter, it seems, which is exactly what his News Corp (NWSA) did in Q 4, 2009 Furthermore, Murdoch is poised to collect even more during this quarter, courtesy of the most successful film of all time , Avatar, which was produced by his Twentieth Century Fox subsidiary Perhaps that partially explains the outspoken billionaire's swagger during his earnings call this week when he was quoted as saying, among other things, "Content is not just king, it is the emperor of all things digital"

As Murdoch and Sulzberger Dream of Paywalls, Consider Poor Newsday's Example (BNET - Media) - Jan 28, 2010

As Murdoch and Sulzberger Dream of Paywalls, Consider Poor Newsday's Example . Perhaps the only way to figure out what is actually going on in the media industry these days is to not get too mired in the daily, weekly, or even monthly details, because the pace of news has quickened to the extent that even the small army of us here at BNET could never hope to cover everything of interest to the average media exec Take the issue of paywalls

The True Test of the NYT's Paywall Plan Will Be e-Readers (BNET - Media) - Jan 25, 2010

Newspapers and e readers are both mobile devices, and in some markets, such as Japan, they already enjoy a synergistic pricing relationship such that readers pay incrementally for accessing news content when they pay their monthly cellphone bill Since the Times execs are talking about implementing a "metered" system of charging for content, it's worth noting that as Google's micro payment platform emerges later this year, there may be an opportunity online for a bit of revenue action, but the main financial game will be played over mobile devices from here on out And that, in the end, is where the Times plan will live or die * = Internal memo from Chair Arthur Sulzberger, Jr, and CEO Janet Robinson dated , 2010 at 9:28 AM Related BNET Media Links: Why the New York Times' Paywall Won't Lead to Online Isolation The New York Times' Paywall: Build Carefully to Avoid Collapse Latest Attempt by NYT to Erect Paywall Unlikely to Succeed In addition to serving as a BNET Media analyst/blogger, David Weir is a veteran journalist and the author of several books

Google Throws Down the Guantlet in China Over Human Rights and Censorship (BNET - Media) - Jan 12, 2010

Not even the Obama administration has found enough chutzpah to stand up to the oppressive government that routinely censors what its citizens can see or hear or read — a blatant violation of civil and human rights that would not be tolerated, say, in a weaker trade partner At a time when it has been coming under increasingly shrill attacks from opponents of such initiatives as its book scanning project, who accuse the company of failing to live up to its motto to "do no evil," Google is clearly — in this case — taking a highly principled stand Perhaps other companies and governments will now follow its lead In addition to serving as a BNET Media analyst/blogger, David Weir is a veteran journalist and the author of several books Weir is a co founder and vice president of the Center for Investigative Reporting, as well as an editorial board member of The Nation
