Chief among those considerations, of course, is that ad revenue is expected to show a continuing decline when Q1 results are posted. S. Community Publishing President Bob Dickey that said there would be no furloughs in the second quarter and that "division wide" layoffs were not planned, either.

Jen: Shares of E. W. Scripps (SSP) turned in the day's biggest percentage gain when the stock traded up 2.1% to $9.64. Basically, the days are repeating themselves with the newspaper sector: little growth and tiny clips. Too bad Moody's didn't issue its upgrade of the New York Times Co to 'stable' before the markets closed.

The so called winners today are Media General, Lee Enterprises and McClatchy all of which eked out some gains. The biggest percentage advance goes to Lee (LEE) up 2.1% closing at $3.75. Shares of McClatchy (MNI) rose 0.5% to $5.22.

Fitz: The newspaper sector ended a desultory week with a session Friday that sent all but one stock into green arrow territory, and pushed E. W. Scripps (SSP) to a new 52 week high. SSP closed at $9.70, a jump of 60 cents, or 6.6%. During the day it established a new 52 week high of $9.81.

Fitz: A.H. Belo Corp (AHC) ended a good week with a very good session Friday, jumping 9.8% and establishing another 52 week high. AHC closed a little off that new high of $7.60 at $7.48, up 67 cents from its open. The Dallas Morning News parent is getting a lot of mileage out of his first ever profitable quarter as a newspaper pure play.

Fitz: Information Week's Paul McDougall brings the news today that earlier this week, Facebook was No. 7,669,123, for "Dynamically providing a news feed about users of a social network.". As McDougall writes, this patent is for something at the very core of what social media networks do, allow users to send feeds back and forth, and select who can see items. Now that Facebook has been able to patent its way of organizing and posting news feeds, could it use that as a cudgel?  .

Jen: Thursday evening Gannet made the not so shocking announcement that it was selling The Honolulu Advertiser to its cross town rival David Black's Honolulu Star Bulletin potentially wiping Honolulu off the sparse map of two newspaper towns. The publisher of the Star Bulletin Dennis Francis told the AP that under antitrust laws the Star Bulletin will be put up for sale and if no one buys the paper it will be consolidated with the Advertiser. Left unsaid is if the paper has to be sold for any price or a price that suits Oahu Publications publisher of the Star Bulletin.
