Strike threat at BA a boost for easyJet (This is Money | Markets) - Jan 07, 2010

Budget airline emerged as one of the big winners of the fraught Christmas getaway period after notching up a 93% rise in passenger traffic in December compared with a year ago Analysts said the no frills carrier (down 01p at 3634p) benefited from the uncertainty during the threat of strike action to British Airways' services, as well as picking up some disgruntled Eurostar passengers The latest traffic data was released as said passenger traffic fell by 4pc in December, including a 07% decrease in higher paying 'premium' flyers, and a 46% fall in economy passengers Gert Zonneveld, analyst at Panmure Gordon, said: 'Yes, clearly the threat of strike action at BA would have some benefit' BA (up 2p at 1999p) last night said it had agreed to hold talks with cabin crew union Unite, aimed at finding a settlement to their dispute over terms and conditions In addition, easyJet's decision to charter a larger plane to boost capacity on the London to Paris route to take advantage of Eurostar's pre Christmas meltdown looks to have paid dividends by attracting more passengers

British Airways cabin crew to strike over holidays (Financial Post, Canada) - Dec 14, 2009

The airline said it will work with trustees of its pension funds on a recovery program. "A strike is always a nightmare for any airline, and for BA it's another challenge to add to those that [it's] already facing," said Gert Zonneveld, an analyst at Panmure Gordon in London with a "hold" recommendation on BA stock. "It's very expensive and the unions know that." Mr. Walsh has already struck deals with other unions that will cut 78 pilot jobs and improve productivity at the airline's aircraft maintenance unit.

Easy jettison: The budget carrier is riding the recession well, but boardroom ... (Scotsman) - Dec 12, 2009

Gert Zonneveld, airline analyst at Panmure, says the new chief executive must have a strong vision and the ability to stand up to Sir Stelios when necessary. However, he stops short of suggesting that EasyJet's founder should have less influence on the business. "It is very difficult for us sitting where we are sitting to comment on these things in detail, because we don't know exactly what has happened behind the scenes," Zonneveld says. On one hand, expansion in the airline industry must be planned well in advance, as it can take years for the delivery of new planes or to secure new routes and landing slots.

EasyJet boss stands down in fall-out from Stelios row (The Independent - Business RSS Feed) - Dec 09, 2009

And yesterday easyJet revealed that when Mr Carr resigned in May, the terms of Mr Harrison's contract were altered to ensure he remained in place until at least the first quarter of 2010. Mr Harrison said yesterday: "I have loved being a part of easyJet's success but am now looking forward to moving on to a new challenge." He will remain in the chief executive role until June next year, and will be involved in finding his successor. But given the very public tumult over the past year, the search may prove a difficult task. "Disputes leave a sour taste and this one has clearly been so bad that all the board members who were involved have chosen to resign," Gert Zonneveld, at Panmure Gordon, said.

Mind the gap (The Deal Newsweekly) - Nov 27, 2009

As a trustee he has a fiduciary responsibility to protect the interests of the employees and retirees the plan covers. That means pursuing the best deal for plan members, even if it is at the cost of the Iberia merger. "If the trustees are aggressive ..the risk is that the negotiations collapse and an arbitrator could order payments to rise to £400 million to £500 million," says Gert Zonneveld, a London based airline analyst with Panmure Gordon & Co plc. "Then Iberia would walk away." A modest €20 million ($30 million) breakup fee is unlikely to prove much of a deterrent.

EasyJet 'doing fantastically well' despite profits tumbling by 50% (The Independent - Business RSS Feed) - Nov 17, 2009

Despite the bullish outlook, Mr Harrison acknowledged he sees a "tough winter ahead", and the group's shares closed down 14.2p at 378p. Notwithstanding the market's jitters, easyJet is a rare success story in the beleaguered airline sector. "EasyJet is doing fantastically well," Gert Zonneveld, the joint head of research at Panmure Gordon, said. "This year has been the worst ever in aviation history, and has seen some of the worst economic conditions in the UK and Europe for several decades, so to achieve an increase in RPS is incredible." The key to the boosted yields is easyJet's decision to rein back growth, which averaged 15 per cent between 2002 and 2008, to just under 2 per cent for the last, recession hit year. And by slowing growth, it has been able to keep up fares.
