BP Makes Giant Oil Discovery in Gulf of Mexico (EnergyRefuge.com Blog) - Sep 03, 2009

Thunder Horse Hayward, who took over as CEO from John Browne in , is boosting production growth after delays at projects including Thunder Horse led to an operational gap with rivals. BP has a history of pushing back the frontiers of exploration in North America, and pioneered enhanced oil recovery techniques in Alaska. Oil companies have been increasingly turning to more technically challenging fields as oil rich nations limit access. Tiber will help allay concerns over BP's growth prospects given its reluctance to invest heavily in unconventional projects, such as oil sands in Canada, to replenish reserves as maturing fields age. "What today's announcement proves is that BP is a very, very successful explorer," Irene Himona, an oil and gas analyst at Exane BNP Paribas, said by telephone.

What BP’s New Oil Strike Means (Royal Dutch Shell plc .com) - Sep 02, 2009

For the past eight years, BP has led its peers among the majors in what's known as organic reserve replacement—additions to its reserve base that don't include any oil picked up through mergers. "Among the majors, BP stands out," says Irene Himona, the analyst at Exane BNP Paribas who wrote the study that ranks BP at the top. "It has created, through exploration, very large assets, which go on producing for the next 20 to 30 years," she adds. Things weren't always so upbeat.

LUKoil to Buy Stake in Dutch Refinery (The Moscow Times) - Jun 21, 2009

"More broadly, this type of crude oil represents a significant portion for the supply of Total's European refineries." In Russia, Total holds a coveted stake in Gazprom's huge Shtokman gas project in the Barents Sea. It is a LUKoil partner in the northern Russian Kharyaga field and in Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz Caspian Sea gas field. Irene Himona, oil analyst at Exane BNP Paribas, said the deal was intended to secure cheaper crude for the refinery.

Irene Himona, oil analyst at Exane BNP Paribas, said the deal was intended to secure cheaper crude for the refinery. "LUKoil is in a position to more or less guarantee crude supplies from Russia, which tend to be cheaper, heavier crudes," she said. European refiners invest heavily to process more Russian crude and benefit from its discount to lighter, sweeter North Sea oil. Russia's Urals crude was trading at about $70.35 per barrel Friday, compared with $71 for benchmark Brent.

UPDATE 4-Iran says signs gas deal with China, replaces Total (Moreover Feeds) - Jun 03, 2009

'Total stopped its investment because of the political situation, they were not progressing,' said Irene Himona, an analyst with Exane BNP. 'The South Pars project has been in a no man's land for years now because of the political situation.' Like France, China is among six major powers engaged in efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the dispute over Iran's nuclear work, which the West suspects is aimed at making bombs. Tehran denies the charge. China, as well as Russia, gave reluctant backing to three rounds of U.N sanctions imposed on Iran since 2006. Iran said on Sunday it planned to issue $12.3 billion of foreign currency and rial denominated bonds over three years to help finance the development of South Pars.
