Bangladesh feels retailers' wrath (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Feb 05, 2010

Is it any coincidence that Wal Mart's International CEO has paid a short and unannounced visit to Bangladesh just as 11 global retailers called on the Bangladeshi Prime Minister to take "swift action" over the country's notoriously low wages for garment workers. The retailers, including Wal Mart, fear the strikes, protests and factory closures that seem to be endemic in Bangladesh are a risk and could taint their reputations as socially responsible companies One company which knows how damaging that can be is UK fashion chain Primark, which is a regular target for campaign groups

Wal-Mart's sustainability pledge (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Feb 03, 2010

While most industry observers have been unanimous in their praise of Wal Mart's mega sourcing deal with Li & Fung, now that its full impact has had time to settle in there are some out there who are starting to question the retailer's true motivations.  . One of the biggest elephants in the room is where it leaves Wal Mart's recent pledges on sustainability Signing a $2bn deal with Li & Fung seems to be taking a big step away from plans rolled out last July to get its suppliers to complete a Sustainability Index calculating the full environmental costs of making every product on the retailer's shelves

Ugg boots and Jimmy Choos? (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Jan 15, 2010

In what must surely count among the more bizarre fashion pairings of recent times, comfy casual sheepskin boot maker Ugg Australia is teaming up with luxury shoe brand Jimmy Choo on a limited edition line. The co branded collection of women's sheepskin footwear products won't be available until October, and it's hard to imagine what the two teams will come up with "Ugg boot construction with design details that embody the spirit of the Jimmy Choo brand" and "luxury comfort meeting high fashion" are the official lines on the new collection

Sports retailers race ahead (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Dec 14, 2009

Shareholders in two of the UK's biggest sports retailers were buoyed last week after Sports Direct posted a 39% hike in first half pre tax profit and rival JJB Sports named its new chief executive after nearly a year of searching. . The hiring of electronics executive Keith Jones, group retail director of DSG International, is a major relief for JJB Sports, which was dragged back from the brink of administration earlier this year. It also follows the unsettling exit of its previous boss, who was suspended after an investigation into the disposal of his stake in the company.

J Crew cuts to the chase (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Nov 25, 2009

J Crew has consistently outperformed its rivals during the recession providing proof, if it were needed, that shoppers are still prepared to pay full price during a downturn if presented with compelling, trend right merchandise that they can't find anywhere else. . And a more than doubled third quarter profit and an 8% hike in same store sales show that this approach has definitely paid off. . It's clearly not rocket science, but as chairman and CEO Millard Drexler says: "If you aren't buying the right stock, the right inventory, the right fashion it ain't getting you sales except at second and third markdowns and on promotions."

High hopes for Hanesbrands (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Oct 30, 2009

. One supplier that is particularly optimistic about its potential next year is Hanesbrands, which says it has signed distribution deals that should result in 5%, or $200m of sales growth, in 2010. . Target, Walmart, Macy's, Kohl's, Dollar General and JC Penney have all committed to space gains for Hanesbrands' men's underwear and intimate apparel lines like Bali, Playtex, Hanes and Barely There; while Walmart's plans to expand the Just My Size brand could provide an extra $75.0m in casualwear sales in 2010, growing to $150.0m over time. . Hanesbrands says the growth is not dependent on an increase in consumer spending, but will come from gains in shelf space allocation and distribution even if spending patterns continue at today's recessionary levels.

Luxury in line for growth? (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Oct 26, 2009

Following hot on the heels of a new report released last week that says the luxury sector should return to growth next year, the latest results from French luxury fashion groups LVMH and PPR last week suggest any signs of a turnaround are still some way off. . PPR, which owns the Gucci brand, blamed a "lacklustre macroeconomic environment," a drop in tourism and department store cut backs for an 8% drop in third quarter sales. While fashion brands owned by LVMH continued to struggle as the company reported static revenues for the first nine months of 2009.

Peace at last for Puma and Adidas (The Apparel and Textile Business Blog) - Sep 17, 2009

It's what you'd expect from a couple of old pals, but when employees of Adidas and Puma get together next Monday, it will end a 60 year old family feud. . In support of the Peace One Day initiative, workers from the two companies will put aside old grievances and shake hands, play football, and then watch the film "The Day After Peace", directed by the initiative's founder, Jeremy Gilley. . And in the process, they will end a family feud which has divided the medieval Bavarian town of Herzogenaurach since the 1940s, and a mysterious argument between brothers Rudolph and Adi Dassler, then makers of sports shoes under the Gebrueder Dassler Sportschuhfabrik banner.
