It is unusual for mobile operators to discount phones so soon after launch. "Inevitably this will hurt Palm's profits," said CL King analyst Lawrence Harris.

And if Palm's Project JumpStart Doesn't Work Out, There's Always 'Project Defibrillator' [Digital Daily] (All Things D) - Feb 26, 2010

"Given the sizable discounts now prevalent on the Pixi, it now suggests that the real problems for the Pixi and the Pre go beyond insufficient carrier support and unfocused TV advertising campaigns," CL King analyst Lawrence Harris observed in a research note to clients this morning. "Rather, consumers are not finding the Pixi a compelling product in an increasingly competitive smartphone market." if that's truly the case, these Palm Brand Ambassadors the company is sending to Verizon have their work cut out for them — at least at the moment. Sources close to Palm tell me the company plans to introduce at least one new smartphone this year. Perhaps that will be the device that drives demand and pushes the company back to profitability

Palm Under Pressure After Sales Shortfall (BusinessWeek) - Feb 25, 2010

The reduced forecast demonstrates Palm is struggling to revive its reputation as an innovator in smartphones, a category it helped define but that in recent years has been dominated by Apple ( AAPL ) and Research In Motion ( RIMM ). Palm has failed to win customers back with the touchscreen Pre and other models, and would need to broaden its offerings to succeed, says Lawrence Harris, an analyst with CL King & Associates in New York.

Palm Pre and Pixi devices fail to make a dent as stock sinks (NY Daily News - Money) - Feb 25, 2010

That sent its stock plunging nearly 20%, or $1.56, to $6.53. It was the biggest drop in Palm shares in more than a year. The company had initially projected sales of at least $1.6 billion for its fiscal year, which ends in May. But Palm said quarterly revenues will come in way short of the projected $409 million at $310 million at most. The new outlook demonstrates the tech pioneer's latest devices, the Pre and Pixi, aren't winning over customers, CL King analyst Lawrence Harris said.
