Verizon Wireless Launches Home VoIP Service; Competes With Verizon (mocoNews.net) - Feb 03, 2009

Verizon Wireless ( NYSE: VZ ) has launched Verizon Hub, a home VoIP service offering unlimited calls and some content in what appears to be a grab for the home market-and seems to compete against parent company Verizon. In order to sign up for the service people will need a broadband connection (not necessarily from Verizon), a Verizon Wireless service (where the customers will be billed) and a Verizon Digital Voice plan. The digital voice plan offers unlimited calling to the US, Canada and US territories and unlimited messaging to and from Verizon Wireless phones, for $34.99 a month: It's from Verizon Wireless and will appear on the wireless bill, and undercuts Verizon Freedom Unlimited plans by $5, although it's not as cheap as Vonage.

Can Opera Beat Microsoft In The Browser Wars? (mocoNews.net) - Feb 02, 2009

Opera Software is clearly trying to get Microsoft's attention, and while they are at it, ruin their chances of being the dominant internet browser on the mobile phone. Last week, the company flew an executive from Mountain View, Calif., to Seattle to give the press in Microsoft's backyard, including me, this message: Opera is going to unveil a "very aggressive" advertising campaign that will be plastered on buses and billboards to get consumers to download the Opera browser to their phones. Opera Software's SVP Rod Hamlin: "Over our history, we've spent zero [on advertising], so it's a huge shift."
