Boeing, Pratt Won't Have Tanker Competition From Northrop Grumman (The Hartford Courant - Business) - Mar 09, 2010

Northrop to skip U.S. tanker bid: sources (International Business Times) - Mar 08, 2010

Thompson said any solo bid by EADS would be a "face saving, but money losing proposition," noting that the actual cost of submitting a bid was likely to be around $100 million and it was unclear if EADS would be considered a qualified bidder. Richard Aboulafia, defense analyst with the Teal Group, said a solo EADS bid would provide "the momentary illusion of competition," but said the RFP and political forces still appeared to be skewed against a European bid.

Bombardier's Win May Prod Airbus, Boeing to Upgrade Engines (Bloomberg) - Feb 26, 2010

Bombardier Inc.'s $3.06 billion order for its new CSeries jetliner may add pressure on the only larger planemakers to offer more fuel efficient engines for their competing models, the Boeing Co. 737 and Airbus SAS A320. "This is a solid hit for the CSeries," said Richard Aboulafia , an analyst at Teal Group in Fairfax, Virginia. It "will almost certainly precipitate" a decision by Airbus and Boeing on offering new engines for their single aisle aircraft. Airbus , based in Toulouse, France, and Chicago based Boeing have said they plan to decide this year whether to offer upgraded engines as they defend a combined backlog of about 4,500 of the so called narrowbody models

BOEING CONSIDERS NEW ENGINES FOR 737S (Kansas.com: Aviation) - Feb 25, 2010

But that option seems less likely in the shorter term, said Cowen and Co managing director and senior research analyst Cai von Rumohr. Boeing is dealing with its long overdue 787 Dreamliner and must focus on increasing its production, von Rumohr said. Analysts also note that the 787 has taken engineers from other aircraft projects who could have designed replacements for the 737 and its 777. AirInsight analysts Ernest Arvai, Scott Hamilton and Addison Schonland in a new report said they think Boeing will move forward with new engines for the 737. Replacing the engines would be less disruptive and costly than introducing a new airplane, said Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia.
