Popular Refinanced 1.1 Billion Euros of Loans This Year (Bloomberg) - Oct 26, 2009

The total amount of refinancing on the bank's books stands at about 2.45 percent of loans, a figure equivalent to about 2 billion euros, he said. Banks including Popular, Banco Sabadell SA and Bankinter SA have divulged details of their loan refinancing as a debate rages in Spain over whether Spanish lenders are under reporting loan losses amid rising defaults by companies and consumers. Many banks may be "avoiding recognition of the true scale" of the deterioration in assets, Moody's Investors Service said Oct. 13. Santiago Lopez , a Madrid based analyst at Credit Suisse AG, estimates that the industry may be understating bad loans by as much as 30 percent. "Remember that we only do this when we think that there is a very reasonable expectation of the company being viable," said Gonzalez Robatto, referring to the bank's refinancing policy.

FOCUS: BBVA Joins Spanish Banks In Capital Raising Push (Wall Street Journal) - Sep 18, 2009

He said the initiatives will allow the bank to raise core capital , the main yardstick of a bank's financial strength , to 8% by the year end. At 1339 GMT, BBVA's shares were up EUR0.01, or 0.2%, at EUR12.29. The stock has rallied 48% since the beginning of the year amid a sharp general rebound in the financial sector. Still, brokerage Credit Suisse earlier this week downgraded BBVA's stock to underperform, citing an "excessive" concentration of loans in Spain and expectations of weaker earnings growth, although analyst Santiago Lopez said his main worry with Spanish banks wasn't solvency. He said the country's main problems include dealing with a pool of EUR322 billion in loans to real estate developers, declining loan coverage ratios and restructured loans.
