Market Report: BSkyB sparkles amid News Corp bid talk (The Independent - Business RSS Feed) - Mar 12, 2010

The electoral theory was dismissed as wide of the mark, and there were questions about the financing of such a large deal. UBS's analyst Polo Tang added that News Corp already had "effective control and it could have acquired BSkyB in the past at a lower share price".

In an attempt to capitalise on such a change, News Corp, which owns around 39 per cent of Sky, was said to be mulling over an offer of up to 750p per share to assume full control, delist the broadcaster and take it private. Though the rumours drove Sky to a late high of more than 6 per cent, market opinion was divided, with traders labelling the speculation as nothing more than end of week gossip. The Alberta government's decision yesterday to roll back on royalties, a bid to bring energy investment back to the province, is expected to benefit several companies. UBS Securities Canada analyst Chad Friess said in a research report that the winners should include Cenovus Energy CVE T. , EnCana Corp. ECA T and Talisman Energy TLM T among the large cap companies, PetroBakken Energy PBN T among the mid caps, and Trican Well Service TCW T and Calfrac Well Services CFW T among the services firms."We expect players that have amassed significant positions in unconventional plays to benefit the most from [yesterday's] announcement," Mr. Friess wrote. "Given the type of curves (high declines, significant per cent of overall production occurring in the first year); most of the wells will have yielded a large percentage of their value before royalties can ramp up
