Airlines adding up losses from February storms (Top Business News) - Mar 04, 2010

Helane Becker, an analyst who covers the industry for Jesup & Lamont, estimates that the lost revenue will total between $80 million and $100 million for the whole industry. For US Airways and Continental, the storm related losses amount to about 1 percent of each carrier's expected revenue in the first quarter, according to analysts. But with airlines struggling to return to profitability after two years of heavy losses, every million counts. The storms caused airlines to cancel several thousand flights and to delay many others. FlightStats.com, which tracks airline operations, says total flight cancellations rose to about 38,000 in February from about 18,000 in January, although it wasn't clear whether the entire increase was due to the storms.

Hero 'Sully' Rides Off Into Sunset (The Street.com - Ted Reed) - Mar 03, 2010

Hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger retired from US Airways ( LCC Quote ) on Wednesday, saying he wants to spend more time advocating for aviation safety and pursuing opportunities resulting from the "Miracle on the Hudson.". Sullenberger retired 14 months after the incident, where he safely landed an A320 on the Hudson River off Manhattan, and just six months after moving into a job in Phoenix as a member of US Airways' flight operations safety management team. That job enabled him to severely limit commutes from his home in California to Charlotte, where he was based, and to focus on safety.

Although the improved RASM is a sign that business passengers are flying again, Jesup & Lamont analyst Helane Becker downgraded US Airways to hold from buy on Wednesday, saying shares had moved past her $7 price target. Additionally, Becker said that because of the $30 million weather related revenue loss, she has reduced her first quarter estimate to a loss of 53 cents from a loss of 34 cents and reduced her full year earnings estimate to 51 cents, down from 70 cents, prompting a price target revision to $5.10 from $7.
